A
Bridgeport lacrosse event on Sunday honored the memory of a Fairfield Prep student and lacrosse player who was murdered in May.
The 17-year-old was stabbed by another teen outside a home in Shelton.
The games featured players from across Fairfield County and raised money for Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse and Bridgeport Rescue Mission.
McGrath volunteered with the Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse and taught kids how to play the sport.
His family also presented their first donation from the Jimmy McGrath Foundation to Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse. The goal of the foundation is to support charities and youth sports in underprivileged areas, mental health organizations and first responders.
McGrath's family told News 12 while they are still reeling from his death, they want to turn a negative into a positive.
"We just can't kind of leave or roll up in a ball and cry about it," McGrath's father Kevin said. "It's something we need to celebrate, his life — keep the memory going. We can do things from the foundation to support youth lacrosse, to support mental health, to support first responders, the police, officers and military, and we are going to do that. We are going to try to make something that was so tragic into a positive."
