A family is sharing a story of hope after a Bridgeport nursing home lost 13 residents to the coronavirus.
Jewish Senior Services on Park Avenue is affectionately called the Rolls Royce of nursing homes. But COVID-19 took it down the darkest road in its long and distinguished history, seeing a staggering 13 deaths over the past month.
But as days turn into weeks, something truly amazing is happening.
Nancy Tapp, a Navy veteran and registered nurse, is the daughter of 92-year-old Frances Zikaras, a resident at Jewish Senior Services who contracted COVID-19.
After tears and weeks that felt like years, Zikaras kicked coronavirus to the curb.
"She got her second negative result on her 92nd birthday and we were able to, our siblings, come out and hold a little birthday celebration while she was on the balcony," said Tapp.
Tapp's family went from being in the depths of despair to walking on air, and all they could say was thank you to Jewish Senior Services and to the front-line heroes who put their lives on the line to save the lives of hundreds of seniors.
"Even though it's been a really hard time, a lot of positives have come out of it," said Tapp. "We know that tomorrow's not promised to anyone, but my mom, by the grace of God, she's still here with us."
