A group representing black firefighters filed papers Tuesday to join a racial discrimination suit against the FDNY.

Lawyers for the Vulcan Society filed the papers asking to be included in the U.S. Department of Justice's suit against the FDNY. The Department of Justice argues SAT-style exams used in 1999 and 2002 didn't measure whether applicants could fight fires.

The Center for Constitutional Rights is taking up the Vulcan Society's push to be formally included in the suit. The CCR has raised questions about FDNY hiring practices in the past.

While the FDNY union admits the majority of firefighters are white, it says the city is moving to change that. The city recently launched a multimillion dollar recruiting campaign and created a new exam.The case goes before a judge in Brooklyn next week.
