A funeral service was held Monday for the Trumbull man who police say was stabbed to death in Washington, D.C.
Police say 24-year-old Kevin Sutherland was stabbed to death inside of a subway car in D.C. during an attempted cellphone robbery on the Fourth of July. He was on his way to Philadelphia to visit friends.
The funeral Mass was held at St. Jude Church in Monroe.
Police say the suspect, Jasper Spires, is now behind bars facing a murder charge.
Sutherland's loved ones say he touched many lives, and they hope his death won't be in vain.
Sutherland worked as an intern for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes while attending college at American University. His family says he became involved in politics in high school, and would help Democrats in Fairfield County run for office.
A scholarship and internship fund has been started in Sutherland's name at American University.
