Residents at Bridgeport Towers in Black Rock say a month-long elevator outage in building one has left them feeling like prisoners in their own apartments.

"We are sick and tired of being stuck at home because we can't get up or down the stairs," said Gwendolyn Kendrick.

"It's wrong and we deserve better," she said.

Mayor Joe Ganim met with residents at the complex Wednesday.

"They should not be forced to use the stairs when they're seniors and many of them disabled," Ganim said.
"The city is going to investigate and demand the elevators be fixed."

Sen. Richard Blumenthal also demanded action.

"I'm going to make sure that management understands that no federal dollars should be going to Bridgeport Towers if it fails to provide the basic service of elevators," Blumenthal said.

The management did not immediately respond to our request for comment, but one worker at the complex said recent water damage led to the outage, but promised the elevators will soon be repaired.
