Gov. Malloy talks state's storm readiness
State disaster planners are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Irma and Tropical Storm Jose.
Gov. Dannel Malloy says Connecticut learned a lot from hurricanes Irene and Sandy. Since then, flood zone maps have been expanded, roads around Seaside Park in Bridgeport are being elevated and the water treatment plant in Fairfield has extra protections.
"If Hurricane Irma, Tropical Storm Jose or any storm threatens Connecticut, it would be emergency operations centers like this that would spring into action," Malloy says. "We know this stuff pretty well."
Hurricane Irma does not appear to be a threat to Connecticut at this point, but state leaders are watching it and Tropical Storm Jose. If the worst does happen, the "CTPrepares" app has utility contact information.
"The app has an 'I'm safe' feature allowing the user to quickly let others know that they are safe via text, email, Facebook or Twitter," adds Malloy.
In the event of evacuations, buses are on standby to move people out of local flood zones. Interstates 95 and 91 could also be directed to only flow northbound.
