Grief counselors are being made available at two Redding schools following the death of a 6th grader killed in a house fire in town, school officials say.
Officials say Brien Karlson died of injuries following a fire at his home on Diamond Hill Road Tuesday night.
Karlson was a student at John Read Middle School.
Fire crews from several area departments were called in to knock down the blaze.
The state fire marshal's office remained on scene much of Wednesday as neighbors waited for answers.
In a letter, the Easton-Redding-Region 9 School District said Karlson was injured in the fire and died at the hospital after a courageous fight.
Counselors will be available at both Redding Elementary School and John Read Middle School today.
School officials said in part: "During times of tragedy, we are reminded of the strength and capacity to support and care for one another as a community. As we grieve the loss of one of our students, we will find strength in our ability to show compassion as fellow community members, colleagues, and friends. Our school district has a Crisis Intervention Team made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this."
The school district says they are also bringing in a crisis team from Western Connecticut State University.
The team will be available today into next week.
