After nine years of waiting, Stratford volunteer firefighters are celebrating the construction of a new firehouse.

Construction is slated to begin soon on a bigger building across the street from the current station. Firefighters like Alex Sabellico say the new building was needed.

"It got to the point where we couldn't operate with any kind of decency to do what we do," says Sabellico.

Fire officials have pushed to replace the aging building for years. In 2006, the top floor of the station was gutted by a fire.

Voters had previously shot down two referendums to build a new firehouse. The town received a $500,000 state grant to help pay for the project, and taxpayers will help foot the rest of the bill.

The house is expected to be fully operating by the end of 2008.
