The families of Sandy Hook school shooting victims were back in court Tuesday for a wrongful death lawsuit against the manufacturer of the gun used in the crime.

The families say that gun manufacturer Remington Arms should be held liable because the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle that Adam Lanza used to kill 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 is a military-style weapon and should not have been sold to civilians.

Remington argued that federal law protects gun manufacturers from lawsuits, but a superior court judge denied the motion.

On Tuesday afternoon, both sides agreed to a schedule of status hearings roughly once a month and a trial date in April 2018.

The judge also ordered that discovery begin immediately. The gun manufacturer's attorneys said have filed a motion to halt discovery. They also brought up the possibility of a future motion to strike the case.
