Hundreds of runners took their marks Saturday for the fourth annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.
Race organizers say more women in Connecticut are diagnosed with breast cancer than anywhere else in the United States.
They say more than 3,000 Connecticut women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
Lori VanDam, CEO of Susan G Komen in southern New England, says it's rare to find a family who hasn't been affected by breast cancer.
"My grandmother died of breast cancer, my twin sister had breast cancer at a very early stage, so she was lucky," she says. "My mother-in-law has had a double mastectomy. So it's everywhere in my family and in all the families that I know."
The money raised from the race will go toward screening and treatment programs in Connecticut. It will also help fund breast cancer research.
