Jury selection began Wednesday in Hartford in the campaign fraud case against former Bridgeport state Sen. Ernie Newton.
Newton has pleaded not guilty to larceny and campaign finance charges. He allegedly filed false documents to get access to more than $80,000 in public financing for his failed state Senate campaign in 2012.
The convicted felon gave up his Senate seat in 2005 and spent several years in jail for taking a bribe.
He unsuccessfully tried to reclaim his seat this past election.
