Lamont says state could use pension funds to buy minority share of CT Sun

Currently, the team is owned by Mohegan tribe. The WNBA must approve any sale of the team. State leaders have accused the league of unfairly blocking their bid.

Gov. Ned Lamont said Wednesday the state could use pension funds to buy a minority share of the Connecticut Sun.

This would be part of the state's bid to keep the team in Connecticut.

Currently, the team is owned by Mohegan tribe.

However, State Treasurer Erick Russell says he will not sign off on the idea unless it's a good investment.

"In any deal that involves the pension fund, my priority would be making sure that we are getting the best risk-adjusted returns for pensioners" he says.

The WNBA must approve any sale of the team.

State leaders have accused the league of unfairly blocking their bid.
