Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) is asking FEMA to make sure its emergency planning specifically addresses the needs of the elderly.
Lieberman says issues that concern the elderly need to be at the forefront of American policy. His plan is to include special training for local emergency crews in how to deal with the elderly.
Officials at nursing homes like Nathaniel Witherell Home in Greenwich say they?re prepared to help and have evacuation plans for their residents, many of whom are confined to wheelchairs.
Although officials at the Nathaniel Witherell Home say it is prepared with bright exits, fire alarms and evacuation plans, they also say they're pleased lawmakers are also looking out for the elderly.
