Long layover? TSA says airport travelers can pack a hammock

Agency officials noted that hammocks are permitted in carry-on bags, giving travelers a potential alternative to hard terminal seats.

During the height of the busy summer travel season, finding a comfortable place to sit at a crowded airport gate is rarely guaranteed.

However, the Transportation Security Administration is reminding passengers about an unexpected item that is completely allowed through security checkpoints: a personal hammock.

In a post on social media, agency officials noted that hammocks are permitted in carry-on bags, giving travelers a potential alternative to hard terminal seats or carpeted floors during long layovers.

While the TSA clears hammocks for passage through security screening, actual permission to set them up between terminal pillars, beams or seating areas falls under individual airport rules and local law enforcement guidelines. Travelers looking to string up a portable bed during a delay should confirm with airport staff beforehand to avoid safety violations or obstructing foot traffic in concourses.
