A memorial service was held Saturday for a Bridgeport grandmother who was found alive one week ago after going missing, but later died at the hospital.
The family of 84-year-old Teresa Zangrilli came together at Saint Theresa Church in Trumbull for a memorial Mass and a heartbreaking farewell.
Sandy Figueiredo says her mother was famous for giving a look that told her kids she loved them, but that she was the boss.
"Well, it just means so much to us that we were able to bring her home, and I know that she's in God's hands now," Figueiredo says. "Having this Mass to send her up to the Lord, you know, my mom was very religious."
Zangrilli went missing two weeks ago, and though police searched by ground and air, it was a civilian search effort made up largely of News 12 Connecticut viewers who found her.
However, she died at the hospital one hour later.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal recognized the civilian searchers Saturday morning.
"This kind of civilian effort is so meaningful and important. It shows you care," he says. "Teresa Zangrilli came as an immigrant, but she devoted herself to her community, her family, her country."
Searcher Larry Moore says he'll never forget getting a thank you call from Zangrilli's grandson.
"It almost brought tears to my eyes, you know, it almost brought tears to my eyes," he says.
Zangrilli's family they're deeply grateful for the memorial service, and it that it helped them to remember their beloved matriarch for the endless beauty she brought into their lives.
They also say Zangrilli was famous for her Brazilian cooking, which friends and neighbors could never get enough of.
