The FDNY says more than 50 people, including 14 firefighters, were injured in a blaze at a Bronx high-rise Sunday night.
Witnesses say smoke was billowing out of the residential building located at 1794 Grand Concourse. Melvin Allen, who lives across from the apartment where the fire started, says the hallways were dark with smoke. "When I opened the door the smoke just came towards us like it was barreling towards us." Allen says people were screaming and doing anything they could to save their lives.
Fire officials say the fire started in a first-floor apartment. It took a good amount of time to extinguish the blaze due to very heavy winds in the rear of the building.Five civilians were said to be seriously injured; two remain in critical condition. The fire department has ruled the blaze an accident.Related Information
