The DOT has unveiled a series of revamps to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway aimed at "future-proofing" the road and making it more accessible to pedestrians.

The plan would remodel a 1.5-mile stretch of the 75-year-old strip of the expressway from Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street.

Officials presented multiple versions for the future road during a series of public comments - but all would include a so-called "stacked structure", which is two car roads above one another.

Located by Furman Street, the design configures eastbound and westbound lanes one on top of another. Public input requests focused on the shape of the columns and design of the topmost area meant for pedestrians.

The new design looks to lessen the structural integrity challenges the BQE currently faces. The DOT estimates 130,000 vehicles use the expressway daily.

Without the fixes, the DOT says the costs of maintaining the road will keep piling up. It says that not doing these fixes could likely lead to the loss of an anticipated 5,000 jobs and continued frequent road closures.

Cab driver Muhammed Qureshi tells News 12 his job has him on the BQE multiple times a day, often in bumper to bumper traffic.

"It's not easy to go from Queens to Brooklyn," said Qureshi, adding that he hoped the design would have more capacity for cars.

Canarsie resident Doris Aviles tells News 12 she and her husband spend too much time on the BQE due to the traffic, and hopes this plan can make the BQE easier on the eyes, and for commuters, even at the expense of higher taxes.

"100 percent, I'd vote for it," she said.

The next meeting for residents to learn and voice their concerns on the project will be held virtually on Monday, June 24.
