New Milford officials are raising concern for the potential of more frequent road closures as the water levels of the Housatonic River continue to rise due to an increase in rain showers.
Water covered part of Route 7 across the street from Carvel ice cream today. One lane was passable. Route 7 was closed for part of Friday, but reopened in the afternoon.
Officials say the area could be closed once again should there be more flooding Saturday.
Department of Public Works director Jack Healy says the Housatonic River has risen about 3 feet so far.
He says with more rain on the way, the river is expected to rise another foot and crest around noon Saturday.
As a precaution, town officials closed the Indian Trails Bridge.
Thursday's rain scoured out the bridge's entrance and exit.
Healy says there's concern the abutments might be damaged.
DPW crews were out grating gravel roads and inspecting every bridge.
