A New York state law is changing what aspiring cosmetologists must learn in the classroom.

Beginning Tuesday, cosmetology students are required to receive training on working with a wider range of hair types and textures as part of the state’s 1,000-hour cosmetology curriculum.

At Valley Stream Central High School, cosmetology instructor Karen Glasgow says the change reflects skills her students have been eager to learn.

Glasgow says students have repeatedly asked when they would learn techniques such as braiding, styling and cutting natural hair.

For Long Islanders, the issue extends beyond the classroom. Some customers say finding a salon that can work with their specific hair texture can be a challenge.

“If you’re having to turn away people because you can’t work with their certain hair texture, it could cost you business,” said Jordan Black, of Rosedale. “It’s good that you should be trained to work with all different kinds because not everybody looks the same.”

Others say the expanded training is a step toward greater diversity and inclusion in the beauty industry.

“More diversity is definitely a good thing,” said Jonathan Eugene, of Valley Stream. “It took a while, and this is just a small step, but definitely headed in the right direction.”

Glasgow is preparing to open her classroom doors Wednesday, when she says she is excited to begin teaching the updated curriculum and help ensure every client can find a cosmetologist equipped to meet their needs.
