Fairfield state lawmakers joined residents on Wednesday to oppose plans for a "for-profit" treatment center in the town's exclusive Greenfield Hill neighborhood.
Newport Academy wants to open in-patient facilities for young people at two private homes it purchased on Congress Street and Redding Road. It was seeking a certificate of need at a Connecticut Office of Health Strategy (OHS) public hearing.
Opponents, such as state Sen. Tony Hwang, say Newport Academy is misrepresenting itself and won’t address the needs of the most vulnerable young people.
Newport Academy already operates centers in Darien and Bethlehem. The Connecticut Office of Health Strategy has 90 days to make its decision.
