Connecticut residents killed on Sept. 11 were honored on the 18th anniversary of the attacks Wednesday.
Norwalk paid homage to fourteen of the city's residents who were killed that day. The ceremony was held at City Hall where a bell was rung 14 times. They retired and replaced its town hall flag in honor of the victims.
Mimi McDermott lost her son-in-law Paul Curioli in the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
McDermott says it doesn't get easier as the years go by, but she knows Curioli would be proud of the men his sons have become.
Curioli was one of 14 Norwalk residents killed in the attacks.
Darien marked the occasion quietly as a small crowd placed a wreath and roses at the memorial outside Middlesex Middle School.
In Wilton, an honor guard rose a half-staff flag at fire headquarters while first responders honored their fallen brothers.
Wilton Fire Chief Denis McCarthy reflected on the willingness of police and firefighters to rush into the unknown.
"That's how simple the call to duty is for people in uniform," he said.
"We were scratching and clawing and digging," recalled Lt. Richard Kazzi, "trying to get into voids looking for something that just wasn't there."
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks including police, firefighters, and first responders.
