(AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg says a detective has been shot in the arm during a confrontation with a gunman who was shot and killed.
Police say the gunfire erupted around 4 p.m. Tuesday near Harlem, on a subway stairwell. Police say gunman Michael McBride, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Det. Kevin Herlihy was hospitalized with at least one gunshot wound to the arm. No one else was injured.
Police say McBride turned and fired at least three shots, hitting Herlihy, who returned fire and fired 13 times.
Police say McBride was wanted in connection with another shooting Monday. In that incident, the daughter of his girlfriend was shot in the head in Brooklyn and is in critical condition.
