The Connecticut Department of Agriculture announced Friday that preliminary testing confirmed a case of bird flu in a backyard flock in New Haven County.

This is the second case of bird flu in domestic birds in the state this year.

Last week, state officials announced bird flu had been detected in a backyard flock in New London County.

State officials have quarantined the affected location, and the birds were killed to prevent the spread of the disease.

Final results from U.S. Department of Agriculture's national veterinary services laboratory are pending.

Officials say bird flu is a highly contagious airborne respiratory virus that spreads from flock to flock after they come into contact with infected poultry, equipment or clothes and shoes.

Infected birds may experience a sudden drop in egg production and begin eating and drinking less than normal amounts.

No person to person spread of bird flu has been detected to date, according to officials.
