One person died following a fiery crash in Trumbull on Route 8 early Wednesday morning, according to officials.

Police identified the person as Marcos Antoni Rodrigues-DeOliveira.

Police say the van, driven by Rodrigues-DeOliveira, drifted across Route 8, onto the grassy median and then crashed into the bridge abutment.

Officials said it happened on the southbound near Exit 7 around 4:45 a.m.

Rodrigues-DeOliveira was a beloved member of the Brazilian community in Bridgeport.

Gustavo Pacheco says he was horrified to learn the news.

"Nice guy, quietest guy, very shy. Great worker," Pacheco said. "It came as a shock to all the Brazilians that I talked to today. Everybody was like, what, Marcos!"

Police said his van burst into flames after crashing, the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

"I was helping him with his immigration process, setting up documentation for the lawyer. He was going to have a meeting on the 23rd to get his green card, and he was very excited," said Pacheco.

Rodrigues-DeOliveira is being remembered by family as a beloved father, son, husband, and brother who was a blessing to everybody who knew him.

Candyce DeOliveira, his wife, provided a written statement to News 12:

"Marcos DeOliveira, is a loving father, husband, uncle, brother, and son. His world is his family. We all love him dearly, and we are crushed by losing such a wonderful human being. We all wish he could be here to share the milestones and be blessed by his presence longer. He will be missed by all who knew him."
