A teen was arrested Friday, accused of bringing a loaded handgun to William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach. Detectives say the boy is 14 years old. Police are not releasing his name due to his age. They say the gun was discovered on him Friday afternoon.
According to the school district’s website, before dismissal Friday afternoon, a student was brought to an administrator’s office for possible vaping. When the student was searched with a metal detecting wand, school officials say a handgun was discovered on him, which police say was loaded.
The teen has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.
One parent who did not want to be named said the school district barely communicated what happened.
“Don’t send me to the website for anything. That’s a serious matter. I just don’t even feel safe sending my son there,” the parent said.
A spokesperson for the William Floyd School District issued a statement:
“The student will be subject to severe consequences per the district code of conduct and the maximum allowable according to New York State education law. We used every communication method available to alert parents including the website, social media, email and a robocall home. We released the information the moment that the police said we could so as not to interfere with their investigation.”
