Local police chiefs met with the state's U.S. senators Thursday to discuss a federal program that provides police departments with used military equipment.
Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara joined chiefs from across the state in meeting with Sens. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal to discuss the effectiveness of the program.
The meeting comes after questions recently came up about the program following the riots and police response in Ferguson, Missouri.
MacNamara says it would be unfortunate if the federal government took away the option to get the military equipment.
Sen. Blumenthal says that the equipment in many instances will save lives, but needs to be properly used. He says they will hold hearings in Washington this month about the program.
