Milford police say the death of a man whose body was found inside a burning car appears to have been an accident.
The police say the man was 72-year-old Richard Weir.
Calls reporting a car in flames caused a large police and fire presence Friday night at the Connecticut Audubon Society on Milford Point Road. The vehicle was fully engulfed when crews arrived at the scene.
Once firefighters put out the flames, officials say the body of a man was found in the driver's seat.
Authorities do not suspect foul play in the Weir's death, and say it appears that no one else was involved. There was no evidence of an outside accelerant in the blaze.
News 12 is told Weir was parked on a wooden walkway that goes out to the observation deck overlooking the Long Island Sound.
The state medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death, but police say it should explain why he did not exit the vehicle.
The Connecticut Audubon Society's grounds remained open despite the investigation.
