Police say an NYPD officer was shot while responding to a fight in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx Saturday morning.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said the 25-year-old police officer, identified as Sherrod Stuart, was shot in the ankle while responding to a fight involving more than 100 people just after 2 a.m.
Bratton says Stuart was assigned to the plainclothes anti-crime patrol with his partner when they responded to numerous 911 calls reporting a large fight in the street with guns, bats and knives at 2505 Third Ave.
Authorities say Stuart is in stable condition at Lincoln Hospital and is expected to be OK.
Police say the shooting suspect is 19-year-old Christopher Rice.
They say the accused shooter is also at Lincoln Hospital in serious condition.
Police say Rice has a criminal history with five prior arrests.
