Police are investigating an accident at a Norwalk interchange that has left a local man dead.
The crash happened around 3:30 Sunday morning where Route 7 meets Grist Mill Road. Firefighters say it appears the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it plowed into a rock wall, caught fire and burned. According to police, a witness tried to pull the man out. However, he was trapped. The car had New Jersey plates, meaning it could have been a rental.
A member of the Norwalk Fire Department says there have been at least five other fatalities at the location. The state Department of Transportation says it has implemented measures, such as signs and flashing lights, to warn drivers about the area. It has also been working to remove the rock wall and put in a slope where a car could stop safely. However, it says litigation over the Route 7 and Merritt Parkway interchange interfered.
Police have not released the victim's name pending family notification. Investigators are also waiting for word from the medical examiner.
