A Stamford man is in custody after being accused of sexually assaulting a patient at Norwalk Hospital while she was sedated.
Police tell News 12 the 32-year-old victim and the suspect, 44-year-old Rodney Daniels, were both patients at the time the incident allegedly occurred.
Daniels is being charged with first-degree sexual assault and providing a false statement.
Police say Daniels was at the hospital to be treated for PCP use on Aug. 29. They say during the overnight hours, he went in another patient's room.
The patient had been given a sedative for her treatment. Police say Daniels took advantage of that and sexually assaulted her.
"We were alerted to this after a hospital staff member found the suspect in the victim's bed," says Lt. Jared Zwickler, of the Norwalk Police Department. "Hospital staff removed the suspect and then notified Norwalk police."
According to Daniels' arrest warrant, staff waited five hours to call police.
Norwalk Hospital President Peter Cordeau tells News 12 in a statement, "Patient and staff safety are of paramount importance to us. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement on their investigation and also looking inward for improvements in our policies and procedures. As this is an ongoing police investigation, we will not be commenting further."
Court documents show the victim was able to describe in detail what happened, but couldn't do anything about it, telling police, "the medication stopped her from moving or talking and she couldn't even pick her arm up to stop him."
In an interview with police, Daniels admitted to going into the victim's room but said he never touched her.
"I went into her room to talk to her. I wasn't invited. I just walked in and sat at the end of her bed where her feet were," he said to police.
"He does have extensive criminal history and he's on parole," says Zwickler.
In August of 2015, Daniels was sentenced to three years in jail and three years special parole for possession of narcotics and conspiracy to commit larceny.
Daniels' warrant, in this case, says his parole status designated him as a sexually violent predator.
He's being held on $500,000 bond.
