Cellphone and security camera video captured the minutes after a fight in downtown Stamford erupted in a shooting and stabbing. Stamford police said it happened around 2:10 a.m. Sunday on lower Summer Street. Patrol officers came upon a group of 30-40 people in the street who appeared to be arguing and physically fighting, according to police.
“The officers stepped out to investigate, and they heard approximately two to three gunshots in the area. The large crowd quickly dispersed, at which point they were approached by a 28-year-old male who sustained multiple stab wounds and a 31-year-old female who was shot in her abdomen,” said Lt. Douglas Deiso.
Video from a security camera down the street shows a handful of people running away from the scene towards the city parking garage. News 12 also obtained cellphone video from a viewer of the police and EMS response after the shooting. It appears to show officers crowded around one of the victims. At one point, someone yells, “Hurry up! Hurry up!” to paramedics up the street.
Deiso said investigators are still trying to determine if the group had come from a specific bar and what the root of the argument was about. He also said it's unknown if the woman who was shot was the intended target.
People who live and work in the area told News 12 they were surprised by the shooting. That stretch of Summer Street is very popular with several restaurants, some apartment buildings and a movie theater. It's busy but not usually dangerous.
Downtown Stamford’s been relatively free of any fighting or any type of incidents,” Deiso said.
Police spent Monday talking to area businesses and seeing if any security cameras recorded the violence. They said the two victims are expected to be OK and credited one officer for providing lifesaving first aid at the scene to the woman.
