A falling tree limb seriously injured a Westport resident, and widespread power outages continued to plague the community Thursday in the aftermath of the region's second nor'easter in less than a week.
Authorities say post-storm conditions could remain dangerous for some time. Trees could fall at any time under the weight of heavy, wet snow. They also warned of downed live wires.
"Assume they are live and stay away from them," said First Selectman Jim Marpe. "Don't drive over them. Don't touch them. Stay as far away as you can."
Officials described extensive and widespread damage around town that could take several days to repair. To help residents cope, the town opened up warming and device-charging centers.
"Power went off in the evening around 8 o'clock," said Todd Tracy. "No power. It's cold, and the toilets don't work."
One crew spent more than two hours working on a damaged utility pole on Compo Road South, which they had to close to traffic.
Earlier in the day, the William Cribari Bridge was closed in both directions for crews to remove debris and downed wires. It reopened around noon.
About a third of Westport's residents were without power Thursday morning, officials said. By the evening, that number had been reduced to about a quarter.
