The public is being told not to eat fish caught in the West River in New Haven and West Haven after a fuel spill contaminated the water.

Officials say a 2,600‑gallon tanker accidentally released fuel into a storm drain that empties into the river.

The spill led to immediate contamination along the waterway.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health issued the advisory, which will remain in effect for the next two weeks.
