A popular morning radio show is running a fundraiser in a bid to oust Gov. Dannel Malloy.
"Chaz & AJ in the Morning" is one of the most popular morning radio shows in western Connecticut, but now the hosts and their listeners are taking aim at the governor. They're taking donations to try and get Malloy to quit.
It started as a joke about the state's ongoing budget crisis.
"AJ made a joke on the air," says co-host Chaz. "He said, 'You know what this state needs? Its own GoFundMe page.'"
Then they created one.
"Within moments, we had our first donation," AJ says.
Donors wanted to give $1 million to the governor as a "severance package" to get him to step aside.
The governor's latest approval rating, in June, was just 24 percent. Malloy has taken heat for the budget standoff, but state legislators haven't been able to come to terms either.
"The state budget is a very serious matter," Malloy's office said Monday. "And the people...are counting on us to remain focused...not be sidetracked by such silly stunts."
According to Chaz and AJ, it's not just a stunt.
"This is a real offer," AJ says. "Take it."
