Redding's police chief said Monday that he's training a German Shepherd puppy to be a guide dog.
Chief Doug Fuchs says that he and his family will take care of 9-week-old Kato while he is young.
Fuchs says Kato will go everywhere he does so that he's socialized and learns how to behave well in different settings.
He says that in a little over a year, Kato will be handed-off to professionals, where he'll undergo more intense training with the organization Fidelco to become a service dog for a blind person.
