Rell's gas probe gains steam as CT prices top $3.31
Gov. Jodi Rell is gaining nationwide support in her push for congressional hearings into skyrocketing gas prices.
According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in Connecticut is $3.26. In Bridgeport, the price tops $3.31. New Haven enjoys the state's lowest average price at $3.23. Analysts say prices have jumped 35 cents over the past month and nearly $1 during the past five months.
For the third time this year, Rell is urging lawmakers to investigate the jump at the pump. Except this time she has 21 other governors in her corner. They signed a letter and sent it to Capitol Hill leaders Monday.
Rell wants to know why some refineries are closing for maintenance as the summer driving season is getting underway. The letter also questioned capacity at refineries.
She also wants state lawmakers to cap Connecticut's gross receipts tax on gas at $1.75 per gallon; it's currently $2.30 per gallon. Rell says she's not optimistic that the Connecticut Legislature will approve a proposed gas tax reduction from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
