Residents rallied Thursday to call for an end to violence one day after a shooting at a Bridgeport apartment complex left a teenager in critical condition.
Current Democratic mayoral candidate and former Mayor Joe Ganim organized the rally at the Trumbull Gardens on Reservoir Avenue.
As reported, police said a 15-year-old was shot at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The boy was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center in critical but stable condition.
Ganim - who beat Mayor Bill Finch in the Democratic primary - said the rally was not meant to be political. He called on local religious leaders to work with young people in the individual parishes to help stop gun violence.
"I'm out here to fight for my community," Ganim said. "This is where I live, I'm a North End resident."
Independent mayoral candidate Mary Jane Foster called on community leaders Thursday to host an anti-violence summit in response to the recent incidents. "A summit will produce results without exploiting individual tragedies the way today's did," she said.
