A well-known Fairfield Prep football coach and educator died Saturday from diabetes complications.

School officials say 67-year-old Rich Magdon was a fixture at the school as a coach, teacher and administrator for 30 years.

They say Magdon was a Bridgeport native who played high school football at Notre Dame of Fairfield and later attended Fairfield University.

Magdon was first an assistant to longtime football coach Earl Lavery when the team won two state championships. He took over for Lavery after the 1992 season and went on to win almost 100 games.

Those who knew him at Fairfield Prep say he left a lasting impression.

"I think he'd like to be remembered as someone who gave every bit of himself back to the kids and I know he would certainly hope they thought a lot of him for it," says former Fairfield Prep football coach Tom Shea. "We're certainly finding out these last few days they sure did."

Funeral arrangements are still being made. The school also says it will hold a memorial service for Magdon.
