Most communities in southwestern Connecticut avoided major flooding and high wind damage during a severe rainstorm that swept through the region Wednesday night.

Tony Gencarelli, the owner of Vavala Deli in Norwalk, says he is relieved the street his business is located on, which usually floods, was free of any standing water when he opened up in the morning.

"I don't have to go through the ordeal again of cleaning. It ruined my shop last year," Gencarelli says.

Candlelight Terrace, located on the banks of Rippowam River in Stamford, is another place that typically floods during heavy rain. One resident says he is glad the area was spared this time because during previous storms, some residents lost their cars.

Areas east of southwestern Connecticut, however, were not as lucky. In communities like Darien, high winds knocked trees or branches onto power lines.

A spokesperson for Connecticut Light and Power says the storm also caused outages in Bethel and Wilton. Crews were sent to restore power to those areas.
