Firefighters rushed to douse an early morning house fire in Stamford today, and the homeowner and her two children were able to escape safely. Officials say flames broke out at the Myrtle Avenue home at around 4 a.m. The homeowner, Elsie English, says her daughter woke her up, saying she heard a noise. The sound turned out to be fast-moving flames that were engulfing the home. Firefighters say they had some difficulty extinguishing hot spots because of the older home's wooden roof. The flames were contained after several hours. English and her children are staying at a nearby hotel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
