A Stamford nursing home that was in danger of closing acquired a new lease Wednesday.
The city signed an agreement with Center Management Group that will allow The Smith House, located in North Stamford, to continue operating for years to come.
Residents and workers applauded the deal that is part of a 95-year lease.
The Smith House opened its doors in 1963 and hopes to once again start taking in new patients.
Officials say the facility had been operating at a loss of at least $6 million a year.
Center Management Group has the option to buy the facility and plans to upgrade the building from top to bottom.
The agreement requires a planning board vote on Tuesday evening at City Hall, along with a public hearing.
Center Management also has health care facilities for the elderly in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
