Stamford police met with city officials Wednesday to discuss how to make walking in the city safer.

Three pedestrians have been killed in accidents this year in Stamford, the most recent happening last week at the intersection of Hoyt and Summer streets.

Police say some intersections and crosswalks in the city can be confusing for both drivers and pedestrians. At the site of the most recent accident, drivers have the green to go right at the same time pedestrians have the right of way.

Police call the work an ongoing project, but their goal is to help everyone better understand pedestrian traffic laws. Ideas discussed at the meeting included promoting safety education in schools and increasing tickets for jaywalking and drivers who do not give pedestrians the right of way.
