Democratic state lawmakers have presented a proposal to help close a multibillion-dollar budget gap by doing away with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Connecticut legislators say other state agencies can perform the functions of the DMV, including licensing and testing.
Democrats believe the change will help streamline government, but not everyone agrees.
A DMV spokesman says he doesn't see how the Democrats' plan will save the state money because it does not entail job cuts.
The state budget-writing committee will meet Thursday to vote on the proposal.
