A local historian was recognized by Sen. Richard Blumenthal in Bridgeport Sunday for building awareness about some of the hidden historical gems tucked away across Connecticut.
Bob Donahue, of the Hyland House in Guilford, urges people to explore local history and educate themselves about the many cultural resources native to the state.
He says the Hyland House is named for George Hyland, a settler who bought the land it stands on in 1657.
"The Hyland House is the oldest Connecticut domestic architecture home museum, and it has an amazing amount of history that's been able to be saved throughout the years. The original restoration took place in 1918," Donahue says.
Blumenthal honored Donahue and his work, saying, "We have a rich history. We should be proud of it and celebrate the treasures that mark and commemorate it like the Hyland House and the great work that Bob Donahue has done to preserve it."
The Hyland House is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.
