The Bridgeport Healthcare Center nursing home in Bridgeport has filed for bankruptcy, leaving hundreds of workers worried about their jobs.
The privately owned Bond Street facility first filed for protection from its creditors on April 18, according to court records, and a judge heard the case Thursday
Union steward Charles Cravatas says he's worried that the Chapter 11 bankruptcy will cost him his pension -- or severely curtail it. And for current workers, he says they can't get their prescriptions filled or see their doctors.
The troubles go back to at least 2016, when News 12 Connecticut first broke the story of bouncing paychecks and unpaid medical insurance benefits, which officials say sparked a federal investigation.
The U.S. Department of Labor eventually filed a lawsuit.
"I feel bad for the residents," Cravatas says. "They see us all walking around like we're dead men walking."
Experts say that under Chapter 11, Bridgeport Healthcare will have to present the court with a viable plan to pay its creditors within 45 days.
The nursing home did not respond to a News 12 request for comment.
