Police in Bridgeport are stepping up security at local synagogues in response to Saturday's shooting at a synagogue in California.

Officers patrolled Congregation B'Nai Israel in Bridgeport Sunday, taking every precaution to make sure the congregation could worship in peace during this holy time of year.

Rabbi James Prosnit told News 12 that he believes in doing everything he can to ensure the safety of his house of worship.

"We immediately contacted the Bridgeport Police Department because of our concerns, and Chief Perez was only too willing to ensure that there would be additional police protection at the synagogue," Prosnit said.

Prosnit said it was horrifying to see the images on television, knowing his synagogue could also be a target.

"On one hand it's shocking, but on the other hand we're troubled because it no longer is shocking," Prosnit said.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal praised the city of Bridgeport for making extra security available, but said it's sad that this kind of manpower is required to begin with.

"The security needed for this temple and others across the country reflects the spread of this epidemic of hatred," Blumenthal said.

Synagogues in Fairfield and Norwalk also requested extra security Sunday.
