Danbury police say an officer shot a man wielding two large knives in each hand at a mental health facility on Wednesday.
They say the shooting happened around 10:45 a.m. when officers were called to the facility at 38 Old Ridgebury Road two hours earlier for a report of an assault.
Officials say the suspect, a man in his 30s, jumped a fence and ended up in a field part of the old Union Carbide complex near Old Ridgebury and Reserve roads. They say he was spotted with the knives.
Police say when they confronted the man, he refused to surrender and at some point during the confrontation, an officer shot the man.
He was treated at the scene and police say he was breathing and conscious before being taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
The officer was not injured.
State police and Danbury's state attorney are investigating the shooting.
