The estranged husband of a New Canaan mother who went missing nearly six weeks ago gave his first media interview Tuesday night.
Fotis Dulos would not talk about specifics of the case against him or what he thinks happened to his estranged wife, Jennifer Dulos, during an interview with WNBC.
Fotis Dulos did, however, maintain his innocence. Jennifer Dulos was last seen May 24, and police say evidence points to a serious physical assault inside her home.
Fotis Dulos was silent about the case until last week, when he told his five children he loved them in a statement. He also told WNBC he knows many people believe he's guilty in his wife's case.
The couple have been going through a divorce and custody battle for the last two years.
New Canaan defense attorney Matthew Maddox told News 12 he would never allow an interview, especially given the circumstances of the case.
"There is nothing he gains by going on camera," Maddox says.
Fotis and his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, are both charged with evidence tampering and hindering prosecution.
Police say the couple was caught by security cameras throwing out items that tested positive for Jennifer Dulos' blood.
Maddox says everyone who watches the interview is a member of a potential jury pool.
"I think that he was too calm, too collected, too calculated in what he wanted to say," says Maddox.
In a statement to News 12 Connecticut, Fotis Dulos says he understands the public's perception of him as a monster but he trusts the system and process and asks the public to do the same.
Law enforcement officials said additional charges are expected in the case against him last month.
