Sacred Heart University closed its campus to students from Bridgeport Friday after 10 students living off campus tested positive for COVID-19.

Non-residential students who live in Bridgeport have been switched to full online learning and were told to stay away from the campus while the university tries to get a handle on a cluster of cases.

Since the school started classes Monday, its discovered 10 positive cases of COVID-19. The university says all of these cases were students living in off-campus clusters.

The university's Chief of Public Safety Gary MacNamara says the investigation has found that the 10 cases have commonalities.

"First of all, they're all clustered within four residences, which is an interesting note," he says. "In addition to that, most if not all, of those individuals had been to a local bar/restaurant within the general area, so we're looking at that as a potential area that may have started this."

The university says it’s hoping it can get all students back on campus sometime next week.

The school also says it randomly samples students each week for asymptomatic testing to catch the virus.
