Town union workers held a protest Friday at Stratford City Hall after recent layoffs and accusations of unfair contract requests.
Members of at least 10 different municipal unions called on the mayor to honor their contracts and stop what they call harsh tactics. Five public works employees recently lost their jobs, and people are bracing for more.
Members of the teachers union say the town asked them to agree to a wage freeze for contracts already in place. Teachers say they're refusing to agree since they agreed to a higher deductible insurance plan last year to avoid that freeze.
"We saved the town $1.4 million by agreeing to this high deductible account," says Michael Fiorello, vice president of the State Education Association. "We agreed to it in good faith, and we expect the town to stick to our contract."
